Along with two other downtown San Diego districts, Columbia San Diego today borders the most developed residential high-rise condos, townhomes, commercial, office and governmental developments downtown.
The neighborhood of Columbia includes areas between Ash, F, Union and the waterfront. Here you will find the Federal and County courthouses, the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art, the State Office Building and a variety of offices in high-rise buildings. Dominated mainly by business establishments, there are approximately 1,800 residential condo and townhome units, parking spaces in the hundreds, dining, entertainment and shopping that have been built and some are currently in the process of being developed. Once completed, the developments will provide enjoyment that will revolve around the waterfront along with a 100 foot boardwalk where piers will be restructured as part of the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan. More than $50 million is designated for public amenities in the project, meant to facilitate enjoyment of the natural environment, rather than to substitute a commercial one. The "water first" strategy is fundamental to the Visionary Plan, which also includes restructured piers and new activity centers.
